You do not have to, but you are welcome to! Please chat with us before you arrive if you are expecting or wanting to volunteer. Otherwise it may be difficult to arrange tasks for you on the day.

Yes, but we have a strict policy of no non-vegan food on the sanctuary. Do not bring meat, dairy, eggs, honey, or any other animal products.
The Lodge
A quiet escape, surrounded by nature and rescued animals.
Tucked away within The Retreat Animal Sanctuary, our wooden lodge offers a rare kind of stay — peaceful, simple, and deeply grounding. No crowds, no rush, no distractions. Just open space, fresh air, and the rhythm of sanctuary life.
Wake to birdsong, watch the animals from your window, and slow down in a way most places don’t allow.
Please note: no non-vegan foodstuffs are allowed on site.A Different Kind of Getaway

If you want, you can get involved. If not, you can simply exist here, undisturbed.
Both are equally welcome.

The Lodge FAQs
Life On The Sanctuary
Feeding Time
Often as a guest on The Retreat you may have opportunities to get involved in feeding time, particularly with the pigs at 10am every morning!
Cuddle Time
Many — though not all — of our animals are happy to cuddle. Always introduce yourself gently to the animals you meet and let them sniff you first. Don’t force yourself at any of our animals, and ask volunteers or staff if you are unsure.
On-Site Shopping
We have a charity shop, a grocery store, a restaurant-cafe, and a pop-up shop — plus a coffee & cake trailer in the car park. Everything you need, all in one place!
100% Vegan
Everything around The Lodge is vegan. The sanctuary itself has a vegan ethos, our on-site restaurant has a fully plant-based menu, and our grocery store Jennings Plantry sources only vegan goods.
